Mission Statement
The Office of Vital Statistics is the sole custodian of all the vital records such as birth records, death records, marriage licenses, and should accurately maintained vital record registry under his jurisdiction. The Office of Vital Statistics works closely with local agencies as well as federal counterparts such as Department of State Passport Office, Social Security Administration and other to verify vital records.

History of the Office of Vital Statistics
After the Department of the Navy towards the early years of the American Samoa Government, the Office of Vital Statistics was under the Department of Legal Affairs. It was primarily under the Office of the Attorney General. After a few years, it was then assigned under the High Court of American Samoa. Then, it was later located at the Utulei Hospital, then to the LBJ Tropical Medical Center in Faga’alu, and was managed by the hospital when the hospital and the Department of Health were one department. The Office of Vital Statistics was later assigned under the Office of the Governor during Governor Lutali’s time then Governor Tauese P. Sunia’s term until Governor Togiola A. Tulafono’s administration in 2007. In 2008, it was enacted by law that the Office of Vital Statistics is assigned under the Department of Homeland Security under the direction of Mr. Michael R. Sala as the first director of the department, then to the year 2013 of the Lolo/Lemanu Administration to Director Iuniasolua U. Savusa in 2013 to 2016, Director Samana Semo Ve’ave’a in 2017 till present.
